Before you pay retail on your next purchase think about finding the item used. There are lots of folks out there who have slightly used items for sale that would love to help you out. Craigslist is a great place to start. There’s also yard and garage sales.

You accomplish a few things buying used:

1) Help environment by not creating a demand for new products.
2) Help the seller get money they need and create more space.
3) Keep money and resources in your local community.
4) You save money.

Before you buy used another thing to consider is, “Can I make it myself?” You can usually accomplish quite a bit with a few simple tools. Don’t go nuts and buy a bunch of power tools. Ask family/friends to borrow if needed. Most hardware stores will cut your lumber for you. Just make sure you have all your measurements with you when you go this route.

Think about what services you can trade/barter for what you need. It’s the way they used to do it in the old days. Get used to it because you’re going to need these skills in the very near future.
